Bible. Books of the Holy Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments

And he made the people slaves from one end of Egypt to the other.

Only [Joseph] did not buy the lands of the priests, for the priests were given a piece of land from Pharaoh, and they lived on their own land, which Pharaoh had given them. therefore they did not sell their land.

And Joseph said to the people, 'Behold, I have now bought you and your land for Pharaoh; here are the seeds for you, and sow the earth;

And when the harvest comes, give a fifth part to Pharaoh, and the four portions shall be left unto you for the sowing of the fields, for the sustenance of you, and of those who are in your houses, and for the sustenance of your children.

And they said, 'You have saved our lives; let us find mercy in the sight of our master, and let us be servants of Pharaoh.

And Joseph made it a law in the land of Egypt, even to this day, that the fifth part should be given to Pharaoh, except only the land of the priests, which did not belong to Pharaoh.

And Israel dwelt in the land of Egypt, in the land of Goshen, and they possessed it, and were fruitful thereof, and abounded exceedingly.

And Jacob dwelt in the land of Egypt seventeen years; and the days of Jacob, the years of his life, were one hundred and forty-seven years.

And the time came for Israel to die, and he called his son Joseph, and said to him, 'If I have found favor in your eyes, put your hand under my thigh, and swear that you will show me mercy and righteousness, and will not bury me in Egypt,

that I may lie down with my fathers; you will bring me out of Egypt and bury me in their tomb. And Joseph said, I will do according to thy word.

And he said, 'Swear to me.' And I swore to him. And Israel bowed down at the head of the bed. [6]
