32 With all this, they continued to sin and did not believe in His miracles. 33 And he wasted their days in vanity, and their years in confusion. 34 When he was killing them, they sought him, and turned to him, and from early morning they ran to God, 35 and remembered that God was their refuge, and the Most High God was their deliverer, 36 and they flattered him with their mouths, and lied before him with their tongues; 37 but their heart was unjust before him, and they were not faithful to his covenant.

38 But he, the Merciful, forgave sin, and did not destroy them, many times turned away his wrath, and did not stir up all his wrath: 39 he remembered that they were flesh, a breath that goes away and does not return. 40 How many times did they provoke him to anger in the wilderness, and provoke him to anger in a land uninhabited! 41 and again they tempted God, and insulted the Holy One of Israel, 42 they did not remember his hand, the day when he delivered them from oppression, 43 when he did his signs and wonders in Egypt in the field of Zoan; 44 And he turned their rivers and their streams into blood, that they might not drink; 45 And he sent insects upon them to sting them, and frogs to destroy them. 46 Their crops of the earth he gave to the caterpillar, and their labor to the locusts; 47 Their vines were slain with hail, and their sycamores with ice; 48 Their cattle he gave up to the city, and their flocks to lightning; 49 He sent upon them the flame of His wrath, and indignation, and wrath, and calamity, the embassy of evil angels; 50 He made the path of His wrath straightened, He did not keep their souls from death, and gave up their cattle to pestilence. 51 He smote every firstborn in Egypt, the firstfruits of strength in the tents of Ham; 52 And he led his people like sheep, and led them like a flock into the wilderness. 53 He led them safely, and they were not afraid, but the sea covered their enemies; 54 And he brought them into his holy province, to this mountain, which his right hand had gained; 55 And he drove out the nations before them, and divided their land for their inheritance, and he dwelt the tribes of Israel in their tents.

56 But they still tempted and grieved the Most High God, and did not keep his statutes; 57 they turned away and changed like their fathers, turned back like a wrong bow; 58 they grieved him with their high places, and with their idols they stirred up his jealousy. 59 And God heard, and was inflamed with wrath, and was greatly angry with Israel; 60 He rejected the dwelling place in Shiloh, the tabernacle in which He dwelt among men; 61 And he gave his fortress and his glory into the hands of the enemy, 62 and he put his people to the sword, and was angry with his inheritance.

63 His young men were devoured by fire, and their maidens were not sung wedding songs; 64 His priests fell by the sword, and his widows did not weep. 65 But as if from sleep, the Lord arose, like a giant overcome by wine, 66 and smote his enemies in the rear, and delivered them up to eternal shame; 67 and he rejected the tent of Joseph, and did not choose the tribe of Ephraim, 68 but chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which he loved.

69 And he built his sanctuary as the heavens, and established it as the earth, 70 and chose David his servant, and took him out of the sheepfolds, 71 and brought him out of the milking houses to feed his people Jacob, and his inheritance Israel. 72 And he shepherded them in the purity of his heart, and led them with wise hands. Glory: Psalm 78 Psalm of Asaph. 1 God! the Gentiles have come into Thy inheritance, they have defiled Thy holy temple, they have turned Jerusalem into ruins; 2 The carcasses of Thy servants have been given to be devoured by the birds of the air, and the bodies of Thy saints to the beasts of the earth. 3 And they shed their blood like water round about Jerusalem, and there was no one to bury them.

4 We have become a laughing stock among our neighbors, a reproach and a reproach to those around us. 5 How long, O Lord, wilt thou be angry unceasingly, shall thy jealousy burn like fire? 6 Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not know you, and on the kingdoms that do not call on your name, 7 for they devoured Jacob and laid waste his dwelling. 8 Remember not to us the sins of our forefathers; Thy mercies shall soon precede us, for we are greatly exhausted.

9 Help us, O God our Saviour, for the glory of thy name; deliver us and forgive us our sins for Thy name's sake. 10 Why should the Gentiles say, 'Where is their God?' Let vengeance be made known among the Gentiles before our eyes for the shed blood of Thy servants. 11 Let the groaning of the prisoner come before Thee; by the power of Thy arm preserve those who are doomed to death.

12 Seven times restore to our neighbours into their bosom the reproach with which they reproached thee, O Lord. 13 But we, Thy people, and Thy pasture of sheep, shall praise Thee for ever, and proclaim thy praise to generations and generations. Psalm 79 1 To the head of the choir. On the musical instrument Shoshannim-Eduf. Psalm of Asaph. 2 Shepherd of Israel! hearken; He who leads Joseph like sheep, who sits on the cherubim, show Thyself.

3 Set up thy power before Ephraim, and Benjamin, and Manasseh, and come to save us. 4 God! restore us; let Thy face shine, and we shall be saved! 5 O Lord God Almighty! How long wilt thou be angry with the prayers of thy people? 6 Thou hast fed them with bread of tears, and made them drunk with tears in great measure, 7 Thou hast made us a reproach to our neighbours, and our enemies mock us. 8 God Almighty!

restore us; let Thy face shine, and we shall be saved! 9 Out of Egypt Thou hast brought the vine, Thou hast driven out the nations, and hast planted it; 10 He made a place for it, and strengthened its roots, and it filled the earth. 11 The mountains are covered with her shadow, and her branches are like the cedars of God; 12 And she put forth her branches to the sea, and her branches to the river. 13 Why hast thou broken down her hedges, so that all that pass by the way cut her off?

14 The boar of the forest undermines it, and the beast of the field devours it. 15 God Almighty! Turn then, look down from heaven, and look, and visit this vineyard; 16 Guard the things which your right hand has planted, and the branches which you have strengthened for yourself. 17 He was burned with fire, circumcised; from the rebuke of Thy face they shall perish. 18 Thy hand be over the man of thy right hand, over the son of man, whom thou hast strengthened unto thyself, 19 and we shall not depart from thee; revive us, and we will call upon Thy name. 20 O Lord God Almighty!

restore us; let Thy face shine, and we shall be saved! Psalm 80 1 To the leader of the choir. On the gun of Gath. Psalm of Asaph. 2 Sing joyfully to God, our stronghold; cry out to the God of Jacob; 3 Take a psalm, give a tympanum, a sweet-sounding harp with a psalter; 4 Blow the trumpet on the new moon, at a certain time, on the day of our feast; 5 for this is the law for Israel, the statute of the God of Jacob.

6 He instituted this as a testimony to Joseph when he came out of the land of Egypt, where he heard the sound of a tongue he did not know: 7 "I took away from his shoulders, and his hands were freed from the baskets. 8 In distress thou hast called me, and I have delivered thee; out of the midst of the thunder I have heard thee, I have tried thee by the waters of the Meribah. 9 Hear, O my people, and I will testify unto thee, O Israel! Oh, if only you would listen to Me!

10 Thou shalt have no other god, neither shall thou worship a foreign god. 11 I am the LORD thy God, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt; open your mouth, and I will fill it." 12 But my people have not listened to my voice, and Israel has not submitted to me; 13 therefore I have left them to the stubbornness of their hearts, let them walk in their own thoughts. 14 Oh, that my people would listen to me, and that Israel would walk in my ways!
